shannon airport

Shannon Airport was last week among the winners at the International World Routes Marketing Awards – for the fifth year in a row.

The awards scheme recognises the success of new routes from airports worldwide. It is voted on by airlines, to recognise excellence in marketing new routes or strengthening existing ones. Shannon had a particularly strong hand this year, with new services from three airlines: Scandinavian, Lufthansa, and Norwegian.

Shannon took the runner-up award in the category for airports handling less than four million passengers per year. It previously won this award in both 2016 and 2014, as well as being runner-up in 2015 and 2013. This means Shannon has now been honoured in each of the five years it has operated as a separate entity.

It already has a strong hand for next year too, with the recent announcement of two more routes. Starting in 2018, Air Canada will fly from Shannon to Toronto, and Ryanair will fly from there to Barcelona Reus.

Andrew Murphy, Managing Director of Shannon Airport, was delighted with the success. ‘We are pinching ourselves again,’ he said. ‘To be on the podium five years in a row is a great achievement, by any standards. This is a huge global industry event. For Shannon to up there year on year sends a very positive message to airlines. It is that Shannon is an excellent airport to do business with.’

The timetable from Shannon for Winter 2017 features direct flights to 19 different destinations in Europe and North America. Frequency ranges from once a week to Tenerife, to twelve times per week to London Stansted.
