croatia airlines direct flights from dublin to zagreb

The Croatian capital of Zagreb is about to become the latest destination that passengers can reach directly from Ireland. Croatia Airlines will introduce direct flights from Dublin to Zagreb on May 3 next, and continue them until October 25.

Fares will begin at €189 return. However, it will be quite a limited service, with direct flights on Thursdays and Sundays only. Passengers will still have the option of travelling on other days though, by taking in a stopover at Frankfurt.

Flying time for the direct flights from Dublin to Zagreb is 2hrs 45 mins. Itineraries with the Frankfurt stopover vary from 4hrs 30mins to 5hrs 45mins.

Passengers can also use Zagreb as a hub for onward travel to other Croatian destinations that are popular with visitors. These include Dubrovnik and Split, both on the Mediterranean coast.

This obviously opens up the option of a two-centre holiday, with a few days spent by the beach, and a few more in the capital city. So, what to do when you get there?

Attractions in Zagreb

According to Lonely Planet, the top attractions in Zagreb include:

  • Trg Bana Jelačića: This is the main square, around which the city revolves. It’s peppered with interesting shops, cafés, flower stalls, and newspaper stands. Find your way here first, to plan the rest of your exploration of the city.
  • Dolac Market: Just north of the square is the city’s colourful main market. It’s mainly fruit and veg, but you can find beautiful hand-made ornaments and tasty snacks too. It’s worth a browse anyway, just to enjoy the hustle and bustle!
  • The Museum of Broken Relationships: This cheery-sounding place must be one of the quirkiest museums in the world. It features the sort of mementos that remain after a relationship breaks up. Its souvenir shop is equally quirky. Check out the ‘bad memories eraser’, for example!
  • Lotrščak Tower: This is a fortified 13th century tower, built to help defend the city from invaders. You can climb to the top for a spectacular 360-degree view of the city. Go there at noon any day to see a cannon being fired. This is a long tradition, said to commemorate an event in the 15th century when locals fired a cannon and repelled an invading Turkish army.
  • Technical Museum Nikola Tesla: If you’ve even a remote interest in science, this museum – named after the man who many consider to be the greatest-ever scientists – is a must see. ‘Out of this world’ attractions include a planetarium and scale models of satellites and spaceships. There are also exhibitions on agriculture, geology, energy, and transport.
  • Art Galleries: Zagreb is a renowned artistic centre. You can choose from several excellent galleries. They include the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Lauba Collection, the Strossmayer Gallery of Old Masters, and the Museum Mamara.
