Dublin Airport US preclearnace

In Ireland, we’ve always had a close connection with North America – and looking at the numbers of transatlantic flights and passengers at Dublin Airport is proof of that connection.

Dublin Airport is now the fifth busiest in all of Europe in terms of connectivity to destinations in the USA and Canada. It achieved this ranking last year, partly due to Aer Lingus launching new routes in Summer 2016 to Los Angeles, Newark, and Hartford (Connecticut), and Air Canada introducing a Vancouver service.

And now Dublin Airport is getting even busier again as a transatlantic hub, following the introduction of a number of new services already during 2017:

Overall, 2.9 million passengers travelled between Dublin and North America last year, and the figure already looks set to break well past the three million barrier this year.

A large part of the reason for Dublin becoming such a major centre for transatlantic flights is the presence there of US Customs and Immigrations pre-clearance checks.

This means passengers from Dublin can bypass those lengthy queues when they land in the US. It is something that more and more travellers from all across Europe are taking advantage of. Many are now choosing to fly first to Dublin from their ‘home’ airport, and then take a connecting flight from there.

Dublin is the only capital city airport in Europe to have such a facility. Last year, it earned another distinction by opening a new passenger lounge after US pre-clearance in Terminal 2. This made Dublin the only airport in the world outside of North America to offer a lounge facility once the customs and immigration checks are complete.

The lounge is called 51st & Green, named to reflect the theme of connecting Ireland and the USA.

If you happen to be travelling to North America soon, make sure that you and your travelling companion(s) are carrying comprehensive travel insurance for the trip.

Travel insurance is particularly important for the USA because of the high cost of healthcare there, should you become ill or suffer an accident. Remember too that you’ll also be covered against all other mishaps that might befall you during your trip, such as lost luggage or cancelled/delayed flights.

Choose single trip travel insurance if your trip is likely to be your only travelling of the year, or go for annual multi-trip travel insurance if you’re likely to do more travelling during the year too.

Whatever policy you choose with Insure My Holiday, you are assured of a high standard of cover at a low price.
