Visit Canada 2017

Canada has always been a great country to visit, but this year is an even better time than most to take in some of what the vast and wonderful country has to offer.

That’s because 2017 sees Canada celebrate the 150th anniversary of its Confederation – when British Rule recognised a federation of what were then called dominions and what are now called provinces, to form a single country instead of a host of individual territories.

In short, Canada’s having a great big birthday party, and everyone’s invited!

So, if Canada is on your travel wish-list, this is the year to do it, and here are five great places to consider:

Vancouver, British Columbia

It may be as far from Ireland as it gets, but Vancouver is a magnificent destination, particularly for lovers of the outdoors. There’s skiing at nearby Grouse Mountain, surfing at Wreck Beach and strolling through Stanley Park. Plus, Vancouver offers plenty of cultural attractions, including museums and outdoor markets, as well as being within easy travel distance of some of the most beautiful scenery that British Columbia has to offer.

Toronto, Ontario

The largest city in Canada, and arguably the most cosmopolitan, with numerous cultural pockets such as Greektown, Koreatown, and Little India, as well as the Chinatown you probably expect. A trip up the CN Tower (at 550m/1500ft, the largest free-standing structure in the world) for a meal in its revolving restaurant or walk along its new ‘skyline’ outside is a must. The magnificent Niagara Falls are within two hours’ drive, and make a memorable day trip from the city.

Montréal, Quebec

Montréal is an intriguing mix of character and culture, as skyscrapers stand alongside 17th century architecture, and you’ll hear more French being spoken than English. It’s a bit like visiting Paris in North America! And just like Paris, it’s renowned for its shopping and its cuisine. Check out the Boulevard Saint Laurent for high-class boutiques and designer stores, while the Old Montréal district has many of the city’s best restaurants.

Banff, Alberta

If you fancy a change from a city break! This is a tiny mountain town (population just 7,500), but its location is what makes it, as it stands among the majestic Rocky Mountain and is surrounded by 6,500 acres of National Park. There’s hiking and biking to enjoy during Summer, and skiing, snowboarding, etc., during Winter. If you love the outdoors, you’ll love it here!

Jasper National Park, Alberta

If you didn’t get your fill of adventure in Banff, travel about 80 miles north to Canada’s largest park in the Rocky Mountains. When you’re not hiking, whitewater rafting or exploring the spectacular Maligne Canyon, get a bird’s-eye view from the Jasper ‘Skytram’. And entry to Jasper is free throughout 2017, just as it is in all of Canada’s National Parks, as part of the 150th celebrations we told you about.
